Alheira, the must-eat sausage in Portugal!
Alheira is a sausage from Mirandela. It was "invented" by the Jews around 1497. They had the choice of being expulsed or converted to Christianism. The "conversos" who were still secretly jews, couldn't eat Pork as it was forbidden in their religion. Scared that they would be denounced because they were not eating pork, they decided to create this sausage made of chicken, bread , olive oil & garlic. So, when people were walking on the street, they would see "sausage" hanging in their smokehouse but they would never think it wasn't pork !
You can slice it and grill it like this or as we did cook the entire sausage in a pan ! It's delish!
